Introduction
Ceftazidime belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It is a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum, beta-lactam antibiotic for parenteral use. This drug is the pentahydrate of pyridinium.
Drug Indications
Ceftazidime is used to treat infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated organisms. It treats many infectious diseases such as lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and skin-structure infections, bone and joint infections, bacterial septicemia, gynecologic infections, intra-abdominal infections and central nervous system infections.
Dosing Information
The dosage will be different for different patients depending on the nature and severity of the infection. The dosing information given here is general information. The usual adult dose for bacteremia is 2 g IV every 8 hours for 14 days. To treat meningitis, 2 g IV every 8 hours for 14 days has been recommended. To treat Sepsis in adults, the dose will be 2 g IV every 8 hours for 14 days. Endocarditis patients can take 2 g IV every 8 hours for 6 weeks or more. For the treatment of Endometritis, dose of 2 g IV or IM every 8 hours has been suggested. This drug also treats other medical conditions.
Ceftazidime injection is given into a muscle or vein. It is administered
